Field Trip: Fourth Visit to Kaiser Permanente and Closing Celebration!

December 7, 2017 | In partnership with the Anaheim Union High School District’s AIME (Anaheim’s Innovative Mentoring Experience) program and Kaiser Permanente, the Allied Health Academy students received a chance to apply for this opportunity. 45 students from the Allied Health Academy at both Western HS and Magnolia HS were selected to attend a series of 4 field trips for the fall 2017 semester.

On our fourth field trip, students were exposed to various health professionals. They listened to a key note speaker and were also mentored by professionals in the field. Kaiser Permanente’s Human Resources team did a final review of the students’ resumes. The HR team also led mock interview sessions with the students. Finally, we closed out the final field trip with an awards ceremony. Four students presented their speeches and shared a reflection about their experience at Kaiser Permanente. Each student received an award of completion in the program. Thank you to everyone for making this experience possible for our students!

Field Trip: Explore Health Majors at CSUF!

November 17, 2017 | The Allied Health Academy went on a field trip to California State University, Fullerton! Students from both Western HS and Magnolia HS attended this trip. The field trip allowed students to explore health majors at CSUF by visiting and experiencing the Nursing Simulation Lab and Biomechanics Lab. Students also engaged with CSUF Allied Health Academy students in a question and answer panel. In addition, OCAPICA’s Well(ness)essity Program gave an Introduction to Wellness workshop to inspire students to take care of their health. Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible!

November 7, 2017 | The Allied Health Academy went on a field trip to the North Orange County Community College District. Students from both Western HS and Magnolia HS attended the event. The “Career Pathways Day” event was hosted by North Orange Continuing Education and Vital Link. Students explored career pathways in Medical Assisting, Pharmacy Technicians, and Funeral Service Assisting through presentations and workshops by professionals in these areas. The teachers from ROP Medical Careers and Sports Medicine classes at both MHS and WHS joined us to chaperone this field trip and support with student discussions. Kaiser Permanente’s Human Resources team hosted a resume workshop and worked with students to edit resumes. Students toured the Central Utility Plant (C.U.P.) and the Thrive Walk/Healing Gardens. On our second field trip, students were exposed to various health professionals. They listened to a key note speaker and were also mentored by professionals in the field. Students toured the labor and delivery department, radiology lab, and optical department.  Students also got the chance to visit the staff resource fair to play games and win prizes. Kaiser Permanente & AIME Field Trip

April 24, 2017 | In an event hosted by the Anaheim Innovative Mentoring Experience (AIME) and in partnership with Kaiser Permanente, high school juniors from Western High School’s Allied Health Academy were given an introductory orientation for the AIME events that will take place during the 2017-18 school year. The program will expose students to various departments within the health care field.

During the introductory event, students were able to interact with Kaiser Permanente professionals to gain a better understanding of the journey to becoming a professional and the skills required for future success in the students’ careers. Thank you to Kaiser Permanente and AUHSD’s AIME Program for hosting the Allied Health Academy students!

MHS Fall 2016 Highlights

For Magnolia High School, the Allied Health Academy has kicked off the 2016-17 school year strong! Since the start of the semester, students have participated in different activities and several highlights are listed below!

September 21, 2016 | In the “Introduction to Health Careers” workshop, students were introduced to different health-based careers and how to differentiate between professions. Through various fun activities, students were able to develop a stronger understanding of the different careers as well as the different health issues each career serves.

September 27, 2016 | For the first field trip of the school year, students traveled to Cal State Fullerton to learn about the diversity of health careers throughout the campus. The importance of education was stressed to students in hopes of aiding their college preparation.

October 6, 2016 | The “Cancer and the Environment” workshop allowed for students to understand how their surrounding environment contributes to cancer and their overall health. In addition, students learned about different habits they could avoid to lower their risk of cancer.

October 13, 2016 | For “Becoming an EMT”, students enhanced their knowledge of allied health careers with the exploration of emergency medical technicians. Besides understanding what an EMT actually is, students were also able to learn about the personal qualities people need to succeed in the profession.

As the rest of the school year is far from over, we are excited to continue providing students essential opportunities that will contribute to their futures!

Summer Program 2016

June 2, 2016 | HAPI-YEP and Allied Health Academy collaborated to bring students to St. Joseph Hospital. Students were guided through several units in the hospital, the cancer center, and the community clinics. Students got a chance to interact with registered nurses, emergency medical technicians, and the friendly hospital staff.
